Giving Thanks in Selfish Times
Published by michael November 25th, 2004 in randomThomas L. Friedman wrote a scathing op-ed in the NY Times today, satirically extolling the hypocrisy and selfishness rampant in our country.
I choose to gives thanks today on Thanksgiving. It’s not to remember the brief moment in history when allegedly native americans welcomed pilgrims and feasted with them, only to later be betrayed and decimated by whites; Not to give thanks for a war that is killing thousands and pretending to protect us while making us many times more at-risk; not to celebrate that the wealthiest 16% consume 80% of the world’s resources.
I simply give thanks to be alive. I give the deepest thanks for my family and my community. I long for some mythical day when all people can have what they need; until then, no one is completely free.

“Here, here!”
Cheers.
My first visit. You have an interesting group blog here. I’ll return often.
Friedman’s comments regarding the sporting of little American flags on our lapels in solidarity with the troops while besmirching every value for which they’re allegedly defending and dying, reminds me of my own Thanksgiving post, where I compared the US government’s willing/active support of the Ukrainian reformists to their simultaneous accusations of ‘paranoia’ hurled toward us here at home for doubting the circumstances surrounding our own shady election.
And, like your final wish, I had said:“Sitting here this Thanksgiving, I truly wish I could say that I believe the American promise has been fulfilled for all of its own people. Until it is, may we never rest.” Keep up the great work here.
