Just Dumb.
Published by Talula October 2nd, 2007 in politicsHomeland Security Secretary Chertoff, in a clever retort, asserted that “illegal migrants really degrade the environment” yesterday when his border fence was criticized by environmentalists who are concerned that a fence will disrupt wildlife habitat in southwest U.S. & northern Mexico. I struggle to see how our leaders can support the idea of a fence. Not only does it strike me as the grownup equivalent of the duct tape divider down the middle of a shared childhood bedroom, it also evokes disturbing and culturally provocative historical symbols of other fences. In a dialogue contaminated with the rhetoric of cultural superiority, where our elected officials talk about border patrol as if it were pest control (from “catch and release policies” to “anchor babies”), the last thing I want to hear is this witty quip about protecting the environment from littering foreigners. Don’t even get me started on the Minutemen and their lousy t-shirts.

Mindless dogma from empty minds… If we would kindly install drinking fountains, dumpsters, and porta-potties, along the unpatrolled stretches, surely litter would be less of a problem.
How ironic that the “anchor babies” page you linked to is Oklahoma Senator Inhofe, who is pictured in front of the state’s indigenous flag… This is of course, the same Senator who claimed in 2003 that global warming was a hoax, second only to the hoax of the separation of church and state… The section from Wikipedia on Jim’s Environmental Record is quite amusing indeed.
Surely these older people are so entrenched in their xenophobic racism, it would take a tremendous event to reform their views. The children are our only hope it seems for turning the tide, that as power passes from the hands of the fearful, that the courageous may take their place.
